Position Summary

The Business Advisor provides client assistance with the development of comprehensive business plans, financial proposal development as well as operations, market development, organizational structure development, and financial management.  Technical assistance to clients is provided to deal effectively with, for example, loan requests, marketing challenges, organizational conflict, personnel matters and business phase strategies.

Scope of Work

The Business Advisor interacts with aspiring or existing small business owners through appointment-based, confidential one-on-one advising, research and training.  The intent is to assist clients in making effective business decisions by employing proven and effective tools and/or practices broadly used in business management.  Examples include, but are not limited to, software applications to conduct financial analysis and management, market research tools for the commercialization of goods and services, techniques to enhance organizational effectiveness and strategic development of business phase.  The Business Advisor may also teach short courses in the operational aspects of business management to business owners and managers on an as-needed basis, depending on the resources available in the service area.  Through engagement with the business community, the Business Advisor must be able to leverage mutually beneficial partnerships to deliver services in support of SBDC clients.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a Master’s degree in business or a closely related field and no less than three years of experience related to economic or entrepreneurial development.  An equivalent combination of training and experience may substitute for the Master’s degree.
Financial and or banking experience required. Proficiency with standard software programs – especially business accounting and spreadsheet applications.  Effective communication skills required.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in establishing economic development, community, and business relationships; experience in advising small businesses; five or more years of small business ownership and/or management; Small Business lending experience; public speaking.

The successful candidate must complete SBDC certification within six months after being hired — or be making satisfactory progress toward completion, as determined by the SBDC’s Certification and Professional Development Committee.  CBAs will be expected to pursue on-going professional development and continuing education to maintain their certification.
