Experts are seeing a trend in hackers focusing their efforts on small to medium-sized businesses because their security systems are easier to penetrate. Hackers who target small businesses may be trying to get personal information about that company’s employees or customers, including social security numbers or credit card information. They might also be trying to exploit the vulnerabilities of small business computer systems to gain entry to larger, even more lucrative targets.

In 2016, the average cost to a business in the United States after a data breach was $221 per customer whose data had been exposed. – Ponemon Institute
